So I went to work yesterday at 12 PM. I came home to an angry girlfriend, and a tampered-with computer.
Anyway, when I opened my laptop and logged on... I realized that a couple of things were... out of place.
Now you may be saying to yourself,"Maybe you left if out.."
WRONG! Ask Tony... when we leave our computers and come back.. we KNOW how it should look, and which programs should and should not be running. We know how we leave everything, we know our preferences. We know everything.
So, I go to check my mail through Outlook Express, which is linked to my gmail account. When I hit the Send/Recieve mail button, it tried to tell me that there was no new mail.
No mail within a 12 hour period? HAH, I think not.
So I checked the trash can... nothing there. I checked every folder, the inbox, bulk, trash, etc. just to find that there were no abnormalities other than the fact that I didn't recieve a single message in a 12 hour period.
Feeling sticky and confused... I came up with the genius idea to go ahead and check gmail through Internet Explorer. Strangely enough, the History tab was open. Now if you know me, I don't need or use the history tab. And if you know the properties of Internet Explorer, the History tab doesn't just appear when you open the browser. It will only appear if it was left open from a previous session.
I don't use the History tab and, when I have, I perform the same way as my Favorites tab... which is click what I need, and then close it because it's ugly... and clutters my space.
So I closed it, and moved onto gmail. What did I find?
I found 2 or so unread messages that were both recieved within that 12 hour period.
"Interesting," I said to myself.
Curious, I sent myself a message... and when it arrived in my inbox, I hit the Send/Recieve button again in Outlook.
BOOM! The message that I composed was there, but still no previous messages.
So concerning the mail, I really did have 2 messages sent to me that weren't showing up in Outlook.
Now, Outlook is not picky and choosey on when it accepts messages... so naturally, I knew someone was snooping on my computer.
My fuck up was leaving my password saved on Outlook... which, evidentley, was the same password needed to log onto my computer.
My theory is that "someone" logged onto my computer, and opened up Outlook, rightly knowing that was where they could find my email. From there, they deleted the 2 messages through Outlook, but neglected to delete them from the source.
Then, they moved to my History tab of Internet Explorer... which they dumbfoundedly left the tab open for me to find.
And just to throw it out there, only 2 people know my passord. Myself, and Christy.
ALSO, I may have hit the wrong button to log off. Instead of switching users (windows key + L), I left the computer logged on.
Regardless of what happened, the person knew where to find my mail, and used the History tab.
If I wanted to point a finger, I could point it at Christy. She leaves her History Tab open. BUT I trust Christy enough to not do that.
I would, however, like input on the situation. I want you guys to tell me what YOU think. |
